Part 1 : Upgrading your BT Master Socket

This section applies to people who have a BT Master Socket that looks like this...

This unit can be upgraded for little cost, and by yourself at home using this quick and easy upgrade guide.

Why upgrade it?

This is due to a charged line running through it called the 'Bell Wire' which leaves a lot of interference on the line. This essentially was what allowed old style analogue phones to ring. Even though it is now unused, simply having it connected will result in a speed drop of up to 2.5 mb.

For those with the router by the master socket (preferred)

The most preferable method is to buy a new XTE-2005 faceplate, and have your router connected directly to it. This will integrate your microfilter and master socket giving the best possible performance, meanwhile upgrading the components to high quality ones and removing the outdated bell wire.

The product best for you is:

For those with the router situated on an extension away from the master socket

The I-Plate is the best master socket upgrade in this case, as it gives the best signal to extensions, upgrades the components to high quality ones - and removes the bell wire problem.

What to expect?

The biggest noticable change will be your download speed increasing, the lower your current speed the more noticable the change will be. A user only getting 512kbps reported an increase right up to 1500kbps, Another reported his 18997 going up to 23200. Personally, I went from 3 mb/s to 4.

This will have the knock on effect of improving your line stability. If you had frequent connection drops, this is thing you can do which will have the most effect.

Due to this, if you have interleaving on your line (this is explained in the second part of the guide) your increased stability will mean your interleaving wikllreduce, giving you a noticable decrease in ping.

Part 2 : Getting interleaving removed

Interwhat?

Interleaving is a feature automatically added to your internet in the UK, that increases your download speed at the expense of quite a large portion of your ping.

Without interleaving, when a packet goes from your game to the server, it will happen as fast as it can through the exchange, with no waiting time.

However with it, the packet will get to your exchange and literally sit about between 8 to 32ms waiting to see what happens, before finally being sent to your server.

If you want, you can generally ask your ISP to remove it for you for free, although some are a little uncooperative - as dropping your download speed is not desirable to most users.

Speaking to your ISP

To get interleaving removed, open a trouble ticket with your ISP, cut and paste something like the following:

Dear Provider,

I currently require my ADSL line to have as low latency as possible, for both VOIP and Gaming, and therefore require interleaving disabled, or 'fast path' setting as the line default.

I am aware of the potential problems that can be caused by this, but want to proceed with this.

Kind Regards,

<Name>

Most ISP's will go ahead and remove it for you without any questions - although some such as AOL tend to have poorly trained support staff who won't understand a word you just said, and will send you a generic and totally non related response such as "how to install an antivirus". If this is the case, just ask that their supervisor handles this case.

Expected Results

You can expect a ping decrease of anywhere between 10 to 30 ms generally, and your connection speed will drop slightly (e.g 5 mb going down to 3 mb).

This generally takes about a week to get done, after they accept your request.
